Is your ductwork properly insulated against unconditioned air in the attic, garage and crawl space? These are the most common unconditioned locations to have ductwork run through, and they can waste 10 to 30 percent of the energy consumed to keep your home comfortable. This wasted energy can be prevented by installing duct insulation to duct runs traveling through these locations.
Duct insulation is beneficial on both supply and return vents located in the attic and other unconditioned spaces. With the recommended amount of insulation in place, your heating and cooling equipment doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your home at the right temperature. This in turn keeps your utility bills low and your home comfortable all year-round.
Duct insulation certainly helps keep air conditioning costs down, but greater amounts of insulation are needed in colder climates where bitter cold winter nights can occur. That being said, the amount of duct insulation recommended for Florida residents is lower than other areas because Florida has such a warm climate.
Ductwork in the attic should be fitted with one to two inches of rigid fiber board insulation. This is the duct insulation of choice for many contractors because of its ability to withstand high temperatures. One to two inches of this type of insulation provides you with an insulating ability of R-4 to R-8. The gaps between the panels of insulation are sealed with duct mastic or pressure-sensitive tape.
With the installation complete, you should see an immediate decrease in utility bills and notice that your heating and cooling equipment doesn’t need to run as long to maintain a steady, comfortable temperature in your home. You should also notice that the air blowing out of supply vents feels nice and hot or quite cold instead of a lukewarm temperature.
