Water-heating costs contribute a significant amount to both energy and water bills. Homeowners here in Palm Beach County are often surprised at how their utility costs shrink once they take steps to make their homes energy-efficient and conserve water. Below are 3 things you can do to save, and for even more tips compiled by the Department of Energy, visit this Energy Savers page :
- Purchase low-flow shower heads: The newest low flow models use less than 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm) and are available in two main types; mist and laminar. The laminar flow shower head emits small individual streams and generates comparably less humidity and steam than the misting design. Your existing shower head may be using 5 gpm or more if it was installed in the early 1990s or before.
- Install aerators: Save water at the faucet by replacing the aerator component to decrease the water flow to 1 gpm. New bathroom fixtures are often set to a rate of 1.5 to 0.5 gpm upon installation. Kitchen faucets are are generally set to 2 gpm. You may want to choose an aerator with water-off control that allows you to stop the water flow without affecting its temperature. There are many different aerators on the market, so be sure to take your current part with you when purchasing the new one.
- Eliminate leaks: Leaky faucets, pipes and shower heads can drive your water bill through the roof. It pays to take a close look at your bath, kitchen and laundry areas on a regular basis to see if any problems have developed. Consider hiring a professional to examine the whole plumbing and pipe system for leaks. Hidden problems left unchecked can cause the most serious and costly damage to your house.
