Energy-Star-Before_DuctsArrowsThe cost of living keeps going up. That’s an unfortunate fact that we all face. There may not be much we can do about the price of gasoline or a dozen eggs, but there are ways to reduce energy losses and keep our homes comfortable at a lower cost. One major item that can impact energy usage is a home’s duct system.

As cool or warm air is generated, it must travel through ducts to the home’s interior space. Keeping the integrity of that air at its highest prevents energy losses and keeps our bills lower. The best and most efficient duct system has the following features:

  • Sealed system: A duct system must be sealed from the point where air originates to the registers where it enters into the home. Any breach or opening along the way is responsible for energy losses. All connections must be sealed, registers must be sealed, joints and areas where branches intersect all must be airtight.
  • Insulation: Any section of ducting that isn’t located inside a conditioned space must be insulated. Insulation forms a barrier that separates your duct’s 68 degree air from the outside 90 degree air. Any ductwork in attics, basements or crawlspaces must be insulated.
  • Duct returns: Interior air should leave the home through returns at roughly the same rate as cooled or warmed air enters. If your duct returns are not adequate, your home becomes pressurized. This makes it difficult for incoming air to enter the home which, in turn, makes your equipment work harder to force the air inside. This increases your home’s energy losses.
  • Proper design: Direct delivery of your air through straight ducting is the most efficient. Twists and turns in ducts degrade the temperature of air as it travels through.

Energy losses from ducts drain your money away unnecessarily. If you have concerns about your ducts, contact us at Robert R. McGill Air Conditioning. We can examine yours and suggest options or simply answer your questions.
