The quality of your indoor air has a major impact on your health and can cause unpleasant side effects such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and fatigue. Dust is one of the most common impurities that most homeowners have to contend with on a regular basis. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to keep dust to a minimum and improve your home’s indoor air quality:
- Dust your home properly. It may seem like a simple task, but many homeowners are not dusting the right way. Cleaning cloths and feather dusters merely push the dust into your home’s air. Furthermore, toxic cleaning chemicals add more toxins to the air. Instead, dampen a microfiber cloth with cool water and dust your home from top to bottom. When the cloth becomes dingy, rinse it clean with cool water.
- Use a vacuum with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter regularly throughout the home. The HEPA filter will trap impurities while the vacuum cleaner removes dirt, dander and debris from the floor. For best results, vacuum your home at least every other day and after you have dusted.
- Purchase an air purifier with a HEPA filter to keep your home’s air free of dust, dander, mold spores and other air impurities. There are several types of air purifiers available, including whole-house systems.
- Consider getting rid of dust-harboring items. Too many knickknacks and too much clutter will increase the amount of dust in the home. If you keep the knickknacks and clutter to a minimum, you have a greater chance of winning the battle against dust. If you can afford it, consider getting rid of carpets and heavy drapes, and instead install hardwood floors and blinds.
Keeping your home free of dust is not a difficult task. With the proper tools, information and persistence, you can win your fight against dust and other air impurities.
