wpID244imgID370When contaminated garage air moves into your home, it will lower the overall indoor air quality and put you and your family at risk for health complications. This is a frightening thought when you consider how much time you and your family spend indoors. Fortunately, three strategies will help you prevent the contaminated garage air from entering your home:

  • Keep the attached garage clean: An abundance of dust and dirt will lower the garage air. By keeping the garage as clean as possible, you will lower the amount of pollutants in the air. Also, do not store paint cans or chemicals in the garage. Old paint cans and chemical bottles will release toxic fumes into the air. Always take the necessary safety precautions when cleaning your garage, such as keeping the garage door open and wearing chemical-resistant rubber gloves.
  • Take care of air leaks: Contaminated garage air can seep through tiny cracks and holes. By thoroughly sealing these problem areas with caulk and insulating your home properly, you will lower the amount of garage air leaking into your home.
  • Install an exhaust fan: The fan will depressurize the garage, which prevents contaminated air from moving into the home. An inexpensive bathroom fan works well for garages and is generally cheaper than a garage fans. Each type of exhaust fan will have its own set of specific instructions. For best results, follow the installation instructions as recommended by the manufacture.

Additionally, do not allow your vehicles to run in the garage. The fumes from your vehicle’s exhaust will quickly fill the air with dangerous pollutants. If you must keep your vehicle running, move it out of the garage and into the driveway.
