If you conduct an energy evaluation of your home this spring, however, you may turn up problems in your home that contribute to energy losses that increase your cooling load. Finding and fixing the problems lowers your electric bill. The two most important factors that contribute to energy losses are poor insulation and air infiltration.

Air Infiltration

You can test the amount of air entering or leaving your home by:

  • Examining the seals between your windows and the exterior. Whenever you see cracks, fill them with exterior caulk. Add fresh weatherstripping to your exterior doors to better seal them.
  • Conducting a modified blower test to find the weak spots in your home for the energy evaluation. Close all your windows and fireplace flues, turn off any appliance indoors that uses gas and shut the exterior doors. Turn on all the interior fans in the bathrooms and kitchen. Walk through your home with a lighted incense stick and note the locations where the smoke wavers, which indicates that air is being pulled in from outdoors. Mark the locations on a drawing of your home and fix the leaks once you’re done with this informal blower test.

Insulation

Adequate insulation in your attic goes a long way toward keeping you cooler all summer and warmer during the winter. When conducting your energy evaluation, access the attic to see how much insulation is present. If you’re not sure that additional insulation would benefit your home, take a picture or a sample to a home improvement store. The staff can tell you if it’s adequate. You can add blown-in or batt insulation to your attic to lower your cooling bills.
