lrg-2013-sources-of-moisture-3Florida residents know that humidity and moisture are constant facts of life. Aside from any discomfort, this moisture can also damage your home. One of main problems that can result from excessive moisture in your home is mold. Mold can have a very serious impact on your family’s health, which is why it is so important to deal with moisture problems quickly to prevent mold from ever appearing.

Repair Leaks

Any leaks in your kitchen, bathroom, laundry room or elsewhere should immediately be dealt with before real damage is done and mold can start.

Don’t Let Dampness Sit There

If you have a spill or dampness in your bathroom from taking a shower, dry it at once. Letting it just sit there is an invitation to moisture problems. Wet clothing or towels should be dried before being tossed in the hamper.

Keep Inside Humidity Low

Try to reduce the humidity inside your home to around 50 percent. If it is drier outside, you can do this with ventilation. In Florida, it is more likely you will have to use a dehumidifier.

Regular HVAC Maintenance

An important aspect of keeping the damp out of your home is regularly scheduled maintenance on your heating and cooling unit. Apart from helping with moisture problems, this will have the added benefit of saving you money on your energy bill.

Maintain Drainage Lines And Vent

Ensure that all lines or systems that expel liquids or other moisture from your house, from dryers to window air conditioners, are draining properly.

Keep Your Foundation Dry

Some of the worst moisture problems in your home can result from poor drainage outside of it. Make sure the slope of the land around your foundation leads the water away to an adequately sized drainage ditch or catchment

While there are a number of factors to consider, keeping moisture out of your house is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the negative effects of mold.
