Although the Palm Beach area is known for its balmy weather, it can get cool enough to warrant a heater for your swimming pool. A heat pump is an energy-efficient solution, but be sure to take these three things into account before making a purchase:
- Size: Select the smallest heat pump that will do the job. The size will depend of the volume of water you want heated, the pool’s design and the average temperature of the area and where the pool is located. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that a study by the Center of Energy Conservation at the Florida Atlantic University shows that a 0.75 horsepower or less pump is usually adequate for home pools. A qualified HVAC expert can advise you on the size that will best meet your needs.
- Efficiency: Look for a heat pump with a high COP (coefficient of performance) number. A heat pump with a scroll compressor is generally considered more energy-efficient than a unit with a reciprocal compressor. Also, variable- or two-speed heat pump will be more efficient than a single-speed unit. Since a heat pump simply transfers heat rather than creates heat, it costs much less to operate than a combustion heater.
- Cost: While a heat pump may be more expensive to purchase and install than a gas heater, it will cost less to operate, given proper maintenance, and last longer — therefore save money in the long run.
