DHPHeating and cooling needs in south Florida may be best accomplished with a heat pump. When properly installed, this machine has a significant level of efficiency simply because the heat pump moves heat instead of creating it from a combustible fuel source. Heat pump efficiency during the summer is about equivalent to a high-efficiency air conditioner.

If you’re considering a system upgrade, there are two figures you need to know about to determine heat pump efficiency: SEER and HSPF.

Every heat pump sold in the U.S. is required to feature something called an Energy Guide label, which is a bright yellow label indicating the heat pump efficiency and comparing its rating to other heat pumps with similar capacities. This makes it easy to choose the most efficient model possible for your home.

SEER, or seasonal energy efficiency ratio, is an indicator of heat pump efficiency during the summer. For the best efficiency, look for SEER ratings between 14 and 18. The SEER rating is also given to air conditioners, and in general, a higher price tag accompanies a higher rating. However, since a high rating indicates that energy costs will be lower, a higher initial investment can pay for itself quickly, especially in south Florida’s hot, humid climate.

HSPF, or heating seasonal performance factor, indicates how efficiently the heat pump can keep your home warm on cool winter nights. For the most efficient model, look for an HSPF rating between 8 and 10.

Homes in the South rely heavily on a heat pump’s cooling ability, so if you have to choose between a heat pump with an incredible HSPF or a unit with a better SEER rating, it’s financially beneficial if you choose the unit with the higher SEER rating.
