Ductless mini splits are heat pumps that don’t require any ducts to distribute the air. They provide significant advantages over a standard heat pump for spaces where ducts are impractical, or where you don’t want to have to extend ductwork, such as in an addition to your home. Furthermore, they offer increased energy efficiency and system flexibility.
Here are just a few of the benefits of installing and using a ductless mini split:
- Easy installation. Since no ductwork has to be installed, installation is more simple than for central HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems. All your HVAC contractor has to do is install the outdoor condenser, and then drill a hole through an exterior wall, and connect the air handler and the condenser with a flexible conduit. Ductless mini splits come filled with refrigerant from the factory, so that’s one step that your HVAC contractor doesn’t have to do.
- Energy efficiency. All heat pumps must meet the minimum SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) of 13, as do mini split systems. However, you’ll benefit from even more efficiency, because the air that blows into your room doesn’t use ducts. No thermal losses occur, and none of your costly conditioned air can leak through ducts hidden in walls or your ceiling. Energy losses through ducts can be as high as 25 to 40 percent. Additionally, each air handler has its own temperature settings, so if you’re not using a space, you can turn it off. This further conserves energy and lowers your electric bills.
- Flexibility. A condenser may support as many as four separate air handlers for a mini split, which lets you expand the system as your needs require. The air handler can go on the wall, sit on the floor or hang from a ceiling. Most air handlers can be operated with a remote control.
- Safety. Unlike a wall or window air conditioner, the entrance port for the conduit is small, which won’t allow anyone to enter your home. The ductless mini splits also are a safe way to provide winter heating, since they don’t use combustible gases, which could create a carbon-monoxide buildup indoors.
