RobertMcGill‑8.9Are energy vampires causing you to lose more energy dollars than you should? They probably are, especially if your home uses a lot of electronics and battery-powered devices. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program estimates that American households spend $10 billion annually on energy they consume that provides no benefit.

You can stop energy vampires from draining your power by isolating the devices that are leeching your energy into one location, from which you can better control their power usage. Here are a couple of steps that can help you prevent energy vampires from overpowering your home:

  • Plug all of those square or rectangular chargers for your electronics into one power strip, which you can turn on or off, depending on whether your devices need to charge. These chargers consume electricity, even when they’re not plugged into the devices they support. Don’t forget your rechargeable devices in the garage. Plug those power tools into a power strip, as well.
  • Some devices, like programmable coffee pots or DVR players, need standby power to turn on when you want them to. When plugged into smart power strips, you can save energy because these strips have a few plugs that stay active, even when the strip is turned off. As long as the power strip is plugged into the wall, you’ll get power for things that operate based on timer controls.
  • Televisions also leech power, even when you’re not watching them. The next time that you’re shopping for a television, look for the Energy Star on the box. Electronics with this designation use far less power when they’re turned off.

Although it’s not an energy vampire, your air conditioner uses about half the power that your home consumes during the summer. Keeping the filters and outdoor condenser clean lower energy consumption. Annual maintenance also increases its efficiency.
