Carrier-Air-Conditioner-1When your unit runs continuously through a South Florida summer, it gets a workout. Knowing when an air conditioner may be about to fail can be helpful. Learning the warning signs of system failure can help you avoid going a period of time without cooling–something no homeowner in living in Florida ever wants to experience.

Watch for the following signs, and then contact your local HVAC contractor to talk repair or upgrade:

  • The first and most obvious sign that your A/C may be about to fail is that it is not effectively cooling your home. If certain parts such as the blower fan and compressor are working properly, yet there is no cool air emerging from the unit, the chances are that there is an issue with the compressor or the level of Freon within the machine.
  • A refrigerant leak can be a common issue when an air conditioner may be about to fail. You may here a bubbling noise coming from the A/C, which can indicate a leak is present. However, refrigerant is a hazardous material, and it should only be handled by a pro.
  • In some instances, an air conditioner can run into problems as a result of the filter becoming clogged with debris, as a dirty filter can no longer trap dirt, which will eventually access the unit’s interior components, decreasing efficiency and leading to poor comfort.
  • You may also want to take note of any strange noises coming from your air conditioning unit, as this is a telltale sign that it is about to experience a problem. Any odd sound like grumbling, squealing or rattling can mean a component within the unit has lost lubrication or that a motor is wearing out. A clicking sound can also signify potential failure of the unit due to failed capacitor or relay.
