foam-and-trayAirborne mold spores can be dangerous to your health, especially if you or anyone in your household has asthma, allergies or other respiratory problems. One of the more common locations for household mold growth is the drip pan of your cooling system. By its very nature, your A/C drip pan harbors standing water, and when this water becomes contaminated with dust, dirt and bacteria, it’s a hot bed for mold growth.

It’s not difficult to prevent the growth of mold in your A/C drip pan, however. It doesn’t take much time or energy, but it does take regular maintenance. Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Develop a regular whole-house cleaning system. If you keep your home clean, contaminants have a harder time making their way into your air ducts and ending up in the drip pan of your cooling system. Set up a schedule to ensure that your home is dusted, vacuumed and mopped once a week. If you see dust coming out of your air ducts when the A/C turns on, consider getting your air ducts cleaned as well.
  • Replace your cooling system’s filters regularly. During the months when you use your A/C consistently, replace your air filters about once a month. If dirty filters remain in place too long, the excess dirt, bacteria and dust spills over into the water in your drip pan, and mold loves to grow in contaminated water.
  • Check on your drip pan. Every time you replace your filter, make a point of checking on the drip pan to see if it contains standing water. If your cooling system unit is functioning at its peak, your drip pan should drain on its own. Repeatedly seeing standing water in your drip pan is a clue that something isn’t working properly. Call an expert to assess your system for other problems.

With a few simple steps, you can prevent mold growth in the drip pan of your cooling system. For more expert advice about the prevention of household mold growth or for other questions about keeping your home cool, contact us at Robert R. McGill Air Conditioning, Inc.
