You expect the air within your home to be free from pollutants and other contaminants, but the fact is, your home’s indoor air quality may be even worse than what is outside your door.
Because homeowners tend to spend a lot of time at home, it’s important that a home’s environment is as healthy as possible — and even more so if you suffer from allergies.
Here are three steps you can take towards improving your indoor air quality and making your home healthier:
- Perform annual maintenance. A unit that has been inspected and tuned-up functions more efficiently and cleanly. Mold may begin to grow in the drip pan of your air conditioner if drain lines become clogged with algae, and a dirty air filter will be unable to trap airborne particles such as dust and pollen. Change your filter every four to six weeks during peak usage and have drain lines flushed during service.
- Seal your ducts. Leaky ducts not only waste energy by robbing you of conditioned air, but they can also have a negative impact on your indoor air quality. Those cracks, holes and gaps can draw in dust, fumes, and other contaminants before expelling them through your vents. Having a professional test and then seal your ductwork using mastic sealant is a great step towards breathing easier.
- Install UV lights. These lights are installed in your existing HVAC system, and work hard to sterilize bacteria, viruses and other allergens, as well as killing mold. The lights work for you 24 hours a day, even if your system is off–giving you peace of mind as well as cleaner air. UV lights also help to extend the life of your A/C when installed over the coils. By providing cleaner air, the A/C can work more efficiently, with less wear and tear on parts.
