The best things in life are free — and that’s certainly the case with solar energy. As a resident of south Florida, you have everything to gain from harnessing the sun’s plentiful energy to power your home’s HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and electrical systems.
Sizing for solar
When you make the decision to install a solar system, you should consider working with your HVAC contractor, who can evaluate your home’s energy needs. Your contractor will take into consideration a number of factors, including the size of your home, how many people live in your home and their energy consumption, and the type of appliances and electrical devices that you plan to connect to the solar power. With this calculation in hand, your contractor then can help you decide how many solar panels to install to capture the sun’s energy and distribute it to your household devices.
What are the advantages to solar power?
When you can provide your own power, you will be amazed at how much money you are able to save. The sun’s energy is plentiful, and free, once you harness it. On top of this, most Florida utility companies participate in net-metering programs. These programs mean that any surplus of energy that your system generates is fed back into the power grid, and you receive a credit for it from your power company.
Besides the long-term savings involved with solar energy, you will notice some fairly immediate results. Currently, the federal government is offering a 30 percent tax credit for solar installations, with no upper limit. Plus when you install your solar system, you will not have to pay sales tax, per Florida’s mandate. Furthermore, some Florida utility companies, including Florida Power & Light, Gulf Power and GRU, offer rebates on solar installations.
On top of all of this, you will be doing your part to keep our planet healthy and green. If you’re using a furnace or more traditional HVAC system, then the electricity that you are using likely requires fossil fuels, which is a nonrenewable energy source. When you make the switch to solar energy, however, you will be harnessing an entirely renewable source of power.
