When your A/C breaks down in the middle of the Florida heat, it can be a nightmare. Calling someone in to fix it takes time, and it could cost a lot of money, but it might not be necessary. Some A/C problems are minor enough that you can diagnose and fix them yourself. Before you call in a professional, look at the following three common scenarios to help you through troubleshooting your air conditioner problems. Even if they don’t solve your A/C problem, they can at least point you in the right direction, so you can better advise your HVAC technician.
- Your A/C won’t turn on. Lower the thermostat a few degrees and wait a few minutes to see if it kicks on. If not, check to see if the circuit breaker is tripped. If it is, turn it back on and wait a few more minutes. If it still doesn’t work, you may have a problem with your wiring or with your compressor, both of which require a call to your HVAC technician.
- Your home isn’t getting cool enough. If you haven’t replaced your air filter in the last couple of months, try that first. Also check for obstructions in the vents. Remove any debris or vegetation near the outside unit, and make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance all the way around. If this doesn’t help, the issue may be the compressor or your refrigerant charge may be too low. In either case, call a professional.
- Your system turns on and off too frequently. Clear away debris from around the outside unit and, if you feel knowledgeable enough, clean the condenser coil and evaporator and comb the fins. If troubleshooting your air conditioner problems this way doesn’t yield any results, the problem may be that your unit is too big for your home. Contact an HVAC professional, who can determine if that’s the case, and if so, can help you find a new system that’s the proper size for your home’s needs.
