While Florida can have drenching amounts of rain in any given season, it also suffers from periodic droughts, making it important to conserve water. However, there are ways that you can lower your water consumption, which also reduces your water bills and may even affect your monthly electric or gas bill, depending on the fuel that your water heater uses.
Here are three tips for ways in which you can conserve water:
1. Change the way that you use your appliances
Here are two ways that you can use your appliances more wisely:
- Wash only full loads in your dishwasher. Dishwashers don’t have settings for the load size. Washing a small load requires the same amount of hot water that a large load does.
- Use the settings on your washing machine to select the right load size. There’s no point in using the full setting when your load is small. Although it won’t save water, it does save energy to use the warm or cold settings for both washing and rinsing. Today’s detergents are effective in cold or tepid water.
2. Fix the drips
A leaky faucet or toilet can put an enormous drain on your water usage and foster mold growth. Test your toilets by putting a few drops of food coloring inside the tank, and then wait a few hours, and check the color of the toilet bowl’s water . If it’s turned color, you have a leak. You can conserve water by replacing the assembly inside the tank, or call your plumber or handyman for help.
Leaky faucets need a new washer that’s easy to install by removing the bottom portion of the faucet. If you don’t have extra washers on hand, take the old one to a home-improvement center to match it.
3. Install low-flow devices
A low-flow showerhead can save many gallons of water throughout the year, including hot water that you pay to heat. Place a pail below the shower head, and time how long it takes to collect a gallon. If it’s more than 20 seconds, you will cut your water usage by changing the leaky showerhead.
