Ductwork problems can cause major inefficiencies with your cooling equipment, so if your energy bills are rising or you’re noticing home comfort problems, faulty ducts may be to blame. Here are some telltale signs that your ducts are in need of inspection, repair or replacement:
- You notice disconnected ducts or damage to exposed ductwork. This is the most obvious sign of ductwork problems. Tangled, disconnected, bent and dented ducts are not able to provide proper airflow, leading to inefficiencies and comfort issues.
- Return ducts are not properly balanced, or are missing altogether. If you have an older home, or if the HVAC system was not properly designed, you may be missing some return ducts. This will lead to increased pressure in certain sectors of the system, heightening the chance of duct failure due to overuse.
- You have blind-alley ducts. A blind-alley duct is another product of suboptimal system design. These ducts do not lead anywhere, and if they are connected to a register, the register itself cannot receive conditioned air from your furnace or air conditioner. Rooms with blind-alley registers are very difficult to heat, which can prompt you to raise your thermostat and, along with it, your energy bills.
- Exposed ducts are not insulated or sealed. You should always seal and insulate all exposed ductwork to prevent conditioned air from escaping; this will help to lower your cooling costs. Insulated and sealed ducts also promote superior indoor air quality, which is important to maintaining good health.
While it’s fairly easy for the untrained eye to detect ductwork problems, you should always leave the repairs to a professional. Your home’s network of ducts and registers forms an intricate system upon which your indoor comfort depends, and should always be serviced by a licensed and trained technician.
