insulation basics palm beach county floridaYou likely have heard talk about how important insulation is to maintaining your home’s energy efficiency, but do you know if your home measures up? Many homeowners struggle to understand how much insulation their house requires, where to install it, and what type to use. To help you enjoy a more comfortable and energy-efficient home, here is a quick guide to household insulation.

Determining how much to use

Having enough attic insulation is imperative. Generally, you shouldn’t be able to see the floor joists beneath your attic’s insulation. Another sign of inadequate insulation within your home is when your space is vulnerable to outside noises, such as traffic, airplanes, voices, and similar noises. Insulation’s main function is to block the passage of radiant heat, but it also can absorb and deflect outside noises. When in doubt about your home’s insulation levels, it’s a wise idea to work with your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) contractor to compare your insulation’s R-value (measure of thermal resistance) against the R-value recommended for Florida by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Figuring out where to install it

Your attic is a critical location for insulation. It works to prevent heat from radiating into your home during the summer, and stops heated air from finding its way out during the winter. Insulation in your floors is a good idea for keeping your feet warm on those cooler Florida nights, and insulation in both interior and exterior walls will reduce noise levels while simultaneously blocking heat transfer.

Selecting the right type to install

Blanket insulation (in either batts or rolls) is the most commonly used insulation material, and it is well-suited for attic trusses, rafters, floor joists, and walls. Rigid foam boards also are ideal for insulating most any area of your home, from your roof to the foundation. Loose-fill is another option that works well for retrofits and locations that are difficult to insulate with other materials. Work with your HVAC contractor to determine what will work best for you.
